Army ROTC Buckeye Battalion Update:
March was our most productive month this year. We’ve been extremely busy.
State of the Corps of Cadets: We have 169 Cadets in the Battalion. We will commission 27 Cadets this semester and after a visit from my brigade commander; we are looking to increase our numbers. Next year we are on track to commission 39 and our goal for the out years are 45 commissioned Buckeyes
Pershing Rifles: Thanks to the generous donations from the OSU Pershing Rifles Alumni, we were able to purchase all new drill rifles for PR. The drill team placed second overall at the national competition this past month. There were over 47 teams competing and our men and women represented the battalion well. This trip was fully funded by Alumni. We could not do these great events without the support of the Buckeye Battalion Alumni.
Spring Awards: We held our annual spring awards ceremony and recognized 50 cadets with awards and scholarships. This year through the generosity of the Alumni, we awarded over $37,000 in scholarships. That is the most we’ve awarded in the past 15 years. Several of the awardees would not have been able to continue their studies at Ohio State without these scholarships. Your donations are making a huge difference. I sincerely thank you.
Notre Dame ROTC Basketball Tournament: This year we took three teams to the annual Notre Dame ROTC basketball tournament. Two men’s teams and a women’s team completed against more than 50 teams during the weekend tournament. This year we brought home some hardware. The Buckeye Battalion Gray Men’s Team went 2-1 in pool play and narrowly missed the Sweet 16 Bracket play. The men’s Scarlet team won their pool and reached the Elite 8 losing a tough game to the eventual champions, Texas A & M (who, by the way, has more than 2,000 cadets to choose from). The women’s team dominated the pool play and were the #1 seed going into bracket play. They made it to the championship game and lost on a last second shot to Marquette. Once again, through your generous donations more than 40 Cadets had the opportunity to participate.
Hall of Fame Dinner: After the spring awards, Cadets, Cadre and Alumni came together for the Hall of Fame Dinner. The OSU Army ROTC Alumni Society, which is recognized as an outstanding OSU Alumni Society, inducted two new members into the hall of fame.
BG (R) Robin Timmons, Class of 1972. Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Robin Timmons has led large organizations in both a military and civilian career. He is truly a great example of a civilian-soldier; balancing two successful careers, family and outside organizations simultaneously. His outstanding leadership qualities ensured his success in both his military and civilian careers. Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Timmons commanded for 11 continuous years; from the Battalion to Group to Brigade level of commands.
LTC (R) Don Hulslander, Class of 1965. LTC Hulslander’s military career spanned 14 years on active duty and another 14 years in the Army Reserve. It included two combat tours in the Republic of Vietnam and service in the Federal Republic of Germany. He commanded Field Artillery Batteries in the 2d Armored Division at Ft. Hood, TX; the 23d Artillery Group in Vietnam; and the 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, KS. This included command of the prestigious Battery D, 1st Battalion 5th Artillery formed by Alexander Hamilton March 1st, 1776 and on continuous active duty ever since.
Norwegian Ruck March: I am proud to say that on the 25th of March 2017, 13 cadets completed a 18.6 mile ruck march at Purdue University (most with at least 30 minutes to spare) and earned the Norwegian Foot-March Badge. These Cadets took time out of their own schedule throughout the spring semester to train up for this event. Over the course of three months, they completed 97 total miles with their rucksacks.
Alpha Company: CDT Bunnell (MS I), CDT Morissette (MS IV), CDT Vadlamani (MS IV), CDT Michaud (MS III), CDT Dorman (MS III)
Bravo Company: CDT Hater (MS III), CDT Herschel (MS III), CDT Firsich (MS III), CDT Rein (MS II)
Charlie Company: CDT Holm (MS I, Team Captain), CDT Conrad (MS IV), CDT Elkins (MS I)

Senior Breakfast: The Cadre and Alumni recognized the graduating seniors at the annual Senior Breakfast hosted by the OSU Army ROTC Alumni Society. Guest speaker MG(R) Tod Carmony addressed the Cadets and discussed the future threats that they will face. He also gave them leadership advise that they will take with them when the graduate. The Alumni Society presented gold bars and coins to the seniors.
Army vs Ohio State Save the Date: I noticed an error on my previous update. I don’t know if anyone caught it or if you did, obviously you are smart enough to realize that the game is on Saturday the 16th and not Sunday the 17th. This year West Point will travel to the Shoe to take on the Buckeyes for the first time in history. The university is rolling out the red carpet for this historic game. We would like to see as many Alumni on campus as possible. There will be a huge invitation only pre-game tailgate at the Recreation and Physical Activities Center for OSU Alumni and friends of the program. More information will follow, but please save the date, September 16th, 2017.
