MSG John Renner

Senior Military Instructor

Master Sergeant John Renner was born in Columbus, OH. He graduated from Buckeye Valley High School in Delaware, OH in 1995. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1999 as a 19K, Armor Crewmen.

Master Sergeant Renner has served in numerous units throughout his career and has held leadership positions in Armor, Infantry, and Cavalry organizations. He has served as a Driver, Loader, Section Sergeant, and Platoon Sergeant in a Tank Platoon. He has also served as a Company and Battalion Master Gunner for the M1A2 SEP Abrams Tank and as a First Sergeant in both a Tank Company and Headquarters Company. His prior assignments include 1-33 AR, 2nd ID, Fort Lewis, WA, 2-72 AR, 2nd ID, Camp Casey, South Korea, G3, Fort Knox, KY, Columbus Recruiting Battalion, Piqua, OH, 4-64 AR and 1-64 AR, 3rd ID, Fort Stewart, GA, 1-307th IN BN, First Army, JBMDL, NJ, 1-9 CAV and 1-8 CAV, 1st CD, Fort Hood, TX, and most recently as the Senior Military Instructor at The Ohio State University.

Master Sergeant Renner has completed three combat tours to include two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and one in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Master Sergeant Renner’s military education includes the Basic Leader’s Course, the Advanced Leader’s Course, the Senior Leader’s Course, and the First Sergeant Course. MSG Renner is also a graduate of the EO Leader’s Course, Master Resilience Training, Battle Staff, Combatives Level 1, Master Counter IED Course, Army Recruiter Course, and M1A2 SEP Master Gunner’s course.

His awards and decorations include the Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (9 oak leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (2 oak leaf cluster), the Good Conduct Medal (6th award), the Nation Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 1 Campaign Star, the Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon (4th), and the NATO Medal. He is a recipient of the Glen E Morrell Award for Recruiting Excellence, the Order of the Silver Spur and a recipient of the Order of Saint George, Bronze Medallion.

Master Sergeant Renner is married to Karen Renner from Bowling Green, OH who is an Ohio State Alumni and they have two children, Logan and Mason.
