Army ROTC Buckeye Update:
It looks like winter missed us this year. February has come and gone and we’ve only had one snow this
semester.
State of the Corps of Cadets: We have 169 Cadets in the Battalion. We will commission 27 Cadets this
semester and after a visit from my brigade commander, we are looking to increase our numbers. Next
year we are on track to commission 39 and our goal for the out years are 45 commissioned Buckeyes
Military Ball: This past weekend we held the 109th OSU Army ROTC Military Ball. This year was the first
year that we held it jointly with Capital University. There were over 400 Cadets, alumni, friends, and
family members in attendance. The event was held in the Archie Griffin Grand Ballroom in the Ohio
Union. The guest speaker was SGT(R) Joe Brown. SGT Brown was a football player at Ohio State who
went on to play for the Seattle Seahawks, but gave up his NFL career to enlist in the Army. He deployed
with the 2nd Ranger Battalion to Iraq in 2005 and with a Stryker battalion in 2007. During his 2007
deployment, his company commander was CPT Eddie Sedlock, another OSU Alumni. Now a Lieutenant
Colonel and an Infantry battalion commander in the 101st Airborne Division, LTC Sedlock returned to
OSU to introduce Joe Brown. SGT Brown and LTC Sedlock had not seen each other since their
deployment and were reunited at the Woody Hayes Football Facility Friday morning. The video and

Buckeye-Thon: BuckeyeThon is the largest student-run philanthropy in the state of Ohio, which raises
funds and awareness for the Hematology/Oncology and BMT Department of Columbus’s Children’s
Miracle Network Hospital: Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Nationwide Children’s treats all children,
regardless of a family’s ability to pay, so the funding raised by this event goes directly to these kids and
their families.
BuckeyeThon hosts a variety of events throughout the year with its culminating, signature event being
the 24-hour Dance Marathon – the event in which our Army ROTC team participated in over the
weekend. The Buckeye Battalion not only raised funds, but also hosted a pull-up and push-up
competitions throughout our 12-hour shift. The team had Dance Marathon participants, cancer patients,
and their family members alike all participate in our activity. The BuckeyeThon staff members and
Cadet Konczos both found our activity to be very successful and well-received. The team represented our
organization with pride, had some fun, and showed that “Every Kid Deserves…to lead the way!”
The Buckeye Battalion team of cadets raised a total of $5,446. This is almost $1,000 more than the
team’s goal of $4,500, and I am very proud of our team and their selfless service. We are extremely
grateful to the Army ROTC Alumni Society, our families, friends, and others who donated to our cause.
New Military Science Course at OSU: Through our partnership with the Department of Health and
Sciences and the Department of Undergraduate Education we are adding two new Military Science
Courses. The Advanced Warrior Skills (AWS) course and the Buckeye Warrior Athlete (BWA) course.
The AWS course was offered this semester and is being taught by Captain Andrew Lavallie. It is an
advanced course that builds off of the military science courses, but is “graduate level” tactics, BRM, Land
navigation, and problem solving. We have 17 enrolled in the first pilot course, but expect that number to
grow next semester. We are also developing a two credit hour course, open to all students, that teaches
advanced physical fitness. We will incorporate our current PT, but expand it to students from the Health
and Science track. Also, next year, PT will be graded. This course will count towards their overall GPA.
Pershing Rifles: Thanks to the generous donations from the OSU Pershing Rifles Alumni, we were able to
purchase all new drill rifles for PR. The drill team is headed to Florida for their annual competition. This
trip is also being funded by Alumni. We could not do these great events without the support of the
Buckeye Battalion Alumni.
Army vs Ohio State Save the Date: This year West Point will travel to the Shoe to take on the Buckeyes
for the first time in history. The university is rolling out the red carpet for this historic game. We would
like to see as many Alumni on campus as possible. There will be a huge invitation only pre-game tailgate
at the Recreation and Physical Activities Center for OSU Alumni and friends of the program. More
information will follow, but please save the date, September 17th, 2017.
