Army ROTC Buckeye Update:

February was a busy month for the Cadets. As the ground begins to thaw, the companies are getting outside and hitting the tactics hard. Squad and Platoon operations are the focus this semester.

State of the Corps of Cadets: We have 170 Cadets in the Battalion.  Our focus is to contract and award scholarships to all eligible cadets. Currently, 83 are contracted, 68 of those are on scholarship (82% of contracted cadets and 40% of total participating cadets). We added 10 new OSU Sophomores to the battalion. They will go to Basic Camp this summer and contract going into their junior year here.  That’s the most we’ve had go to Basic Camp in my time here.

BuckeyeThon: For the third year in a row, the Cadets organized an OSU Army ROTC BuckeyeThon team. The Army ROTC BuckeyeThon team participated in the annual Dance Marathon fundraiser on 9 and 10 February. We had 11 cadets participate over the two days, facilitating a pull up competition for other participants. The competition was a huge hit and the participants loved it. The cadets also raised $2,620 for children at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

General Officer Leadership Panel The Cadets had an opportunity to attend a General Officer Leadership Panel as part of the Jefferson Series in New Albany. As guest of the Jefferson Series, the Cadets and Cadre members had the opportunity to be on stage with General McCrystal, General Pace, and General Hayden for the event.  The panel was moderated by Fareed Zakaria and covered many relevant security and leadership topics. After the event the Cadet had the chance to meet the Generals and talk to them one on one.  The Cadets were extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to hear from such an all-star leadership panel.

Military Ball: Nearly 300 Cadets, alumni, friends and family members attended the annual military ball last week at the Ohio Union. The cadets planned and executed a great event.  The graduating seniors escorted their parents through the Saber Arch to star the evening and the guest speaker for the night was OSU Army ROTC Alumni and Fort Knox Garrison Commander, COL Kaune. He gave an inspirational speech to the Cadets. The Cadets did an excellent job with the ball this year, I’m proud of the Ball Committee and all the Cadets who helped make it a top notch event.

APMS Leadership Seminar: The Buckeye Battalion hosted all Assistant Professors of Military Science from the state of Ohio.   MAJ Cortez led the planning efforts for the leadership seminar. 30 Captains and Majors joined us on campus for the two day event led by COL Oskey, the Brigade Commander. The seminar started with a PT session in St John’s Arena. The stairs are still as steep as they were when you were here!  After PT the APMS’s went to the Jack Nicklaus museum where they did the formal portion of the seminar. Each program presented best practices and the Brigade Commander gave his guidance.

Congressional Scholarship Initiative Meeting: Cadet Command has implemented a Congressional Scholarship Initiative to extend ROTC’s reach and attract highly qualified candidates.   Through this initiative, the ROTC programs work with congressional offices in their area to afford service academy applicants the opportunity to also compete for an ROTC scholarship. Candidates who are not nominated by the elected member for a service academy can now be considered for a national ROTC scholarship. The Buckeye Battalion hosted representatives from all districts along with the OSU Government Affairs Office and the OSU Department of Veterans Affairs to discuss the initiative and provide information about ROTC scholarship opportunities to the elected members.
