Army ROTC Buckeye Alumni,

I want to thank all the Alumni that supported the program during our recent trip to Washington DC for the Army Ten Miler.  It was an unforgettable trip and one of the highlights of my tenure here at OSU. A special thanks goes out to LTG Murray and Mrs. Murray for hosting us again this year.

State of the Battalion: We currently have 176 cadets with 68 contracted and 41 contract ready. During the military appreciation game will recognize the newly contracted Cadets on the field during the OSU vs Michigan State football game. They will take their Oath in front of 100,000 Buckeye fans.

Army 10 Miler: We sent two teams (16 Cadets) and 4 Cadre members to the Army Ten Miler.  Our Buckeye Battalion Scarlet team finished 6th out of 74 ROTC teams.  It was the best finish in the brigade and 6 spots better than last year, despite the brutal conditions during the race.

Pentagon Tour: LTG Murray, Army DCS G8, provided a personal tour of the Pentagon for all OSU Army ROTC Army Ten Miler runners and Cadre. The tour included many key locations in the Pentagon and allowed the Cadets to walk the area where the building was hit during the 9/11 attack.  They especially liked all the Buckeye memorabilia in the G8’s office.

Arlington National Cemetery Wreath Ceremony: Members of the OSU Army ROTC participated in a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Cadets placed a Block O wreath at the tomb. LTG Murray then gave the Cadets a tour of the cemetery including, Senator John Glenn’s tomb, Audie Murphy’s tomb, and other historically significant areas.

LTG Murray Reception: LTG Murray hosted the OSU Army ROTC Ten Miler team at his quarters on Sunday the 10th of September. The Cadets had the opportunity to meet the Acting Secretary of the Army, the SMA, the FORSCOM DCG, and other distinguished officers and OSU Alumni. In attendance were, Honorable McCarthy, SMA Dailey, LTG Murray, Mrs Murray, LTG Laura Richardson,   MG Richardson, MG (R) Jeff Smith, BG (R) Kieth Mcnamara.

Aviation Training: Today, the cadets participated in an Aviation Familiarization Lab.  Two Blackhawks and a Chinook from the Ohio National Guard landed at Tuttle Park at 0700, waking up anyone living on that side of Lane Avenue. The pilots gave the Cadets some training on the helicopters and then gave the entire battalion a chance to fly in one of these platforms.  As soon as the sun came up, spectators from around the campus came to check out our training.  I have a feeling we will have more cadets asking for Aviation Branch in the future.

Fall FTX: We conducted our fall FTX at Delaware State Park. The exercise was a joint exercise with Capital University which consisted of patrol base operations, land navigation, squad and platoon lanes, an 8 mile road march, and no sleep.  For many of these Cadets, it was the first time they had been in a field environment.

German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge: 10 more Cadets participated in the GAFPB competition this past weekend. 6 received gold and 4 earned the silver badge. What is more impressive is their selflessness. They competed for this badge during one of the biggest and most exciting Buckeye Football games in history. How many of you would have missed the game to compete for the GAFPB in the snow and sleet?

Ranger Challenge: The Ranger Challenge team is still improving, but we didn’t have the results that we were looking for during the competition. We finished behind Ohio University and did not receive a bid to the Brigade competition. Our Delta Detachment (Ranger) is only in its first year, so we look forward to good things to come in the future.

Homecoming: Cadets marched in the annual Homecoming Parade for the second year. It not only allowed them to practice some D & C, but to highlight the Buckeye Battalion to the OSU and Columbus Community.
